Vibrational force fields of thiazole and benzene were applied to monophenylthiazoles. Calculations for the normal modes by Wilson’s method are in good agreement with the vibrational frequency data and assignments. The values of the dihedral angles were approx. 40° for 2-phenylthiazole and 45° for 4-phenyl- and 5-phenylthiazole. These values of the dihedral angle are confirmed by calculations using EHMO except for the case of 4-phenylthiazole, for which the value is disputed.
