To a solution of 2, 5-dimethylthiazole (0.730 g, 5.10 mmol) in benzene (80 mL). add N-bromosuccinimide (0.908 g, 5.10 mmol) and a catalytic amount of benzoyl peroxide. Heat the solution at reflux for 2 hours and stir overnight at room temperature. Cool the mixture, dilute with diethyl ether, wash with saturated NA2*S03 (75 mL), followed by saturated sodium hydrogencarbonate (75 mL), dry (NA2SO4), filter, and concentrate.
