The quali-quantitative evaluation and the improvement of the levels of plant bioactive secondary metabolites are increasingly gaining consideration by growers, breeders and processors, particularly in those fruits and vegetables that, due to their supposed health promoting properties, are considered ?functional.? Worldwide, tomato and watermelon are among the main grown and consumed crops and represent important sources not only of dietary lycopene but also of other health beneficial bioactives. Tomato and watermelon synthesize and store lycopene as their major ripe fruit carotenoid responsible of their typical red color at full maturity. It is also the precursor of some characteristic aroma volatiles in both fruits playing, thus, an important visual and olfactory impact in consumer choice. While sharing the same main pigment, tomato and watermelon fruits show substantial biochemical and physiological differences during ripening. Tomato is climacteric while watermelon is non-climacteric; unripe tomato fruit is green, mainly contributed by chlorophylls and xanthophylls, while young watermelon fruit mesocarp is white and contains only traces of carotenoids. Various studies comparatively evaluated in vivo pigment development in ripening tomato and watermelon fruits. However, in most cases, other classes of compounds have not been considered. We believe this knowledge is fundamental for targeted breeding aimed at improving the functional quality of elite cultivars. Hence, in this paper, we critically review the recent understanding underlying the biosynthesis, accumulation and regulation of different bioactive compounds (carotenoids, phenolics, aroma volatiles, and vitamin C) during tomato and watermelon fruit ripening. We also highlight some concerns about possible harmful effects of excessive uptake of bioactive compound on human health. We found that a complex interweaving of anabolic, catabolic and recycling reactions, finely regulated at multiple levels and with temporal and spatial precision, ensures a certain homeostasis in the concentrations of carotenoids, phenolics, aroma volatiles and Vitamin C within the fruit tissues. Nevertheless, several exogenous factors including light and temperature conditions, pathogen attack, as well as pre- and post-harvest manipulations can drive their amounts far away from homeostasis. These adaptive responses allow crops to better cope with abiotic and biotic stresses but may severely affect the supposed functional quality of fruits.

Tomato fruit quality for fresh consumption is determined by size, colour, firmness, flavour, aroma and nutritional properties. Choice of tomato cultivar is important in terms of fruit quality and bioactive compounds. The aim of this study is to verify the influence of photo-selective nettings on fruit quality and nutritional properties of tomato cultivars. Three types of photo-selective nets (red, yellow and pearl with 40% shading) were compared with commercial black net (25% shading) for fruit quality parameters [firmness, soluble solids concentration, titratable acidity, fruit mass, CIE-Lab colour parameters (L*, a*, b*] bioactive compounds (ascorbic acid, lycopene, beta-carotene, total phenols) and total antioxidant activity in three tomato cultivars (AlfaV, Irit and SCX 248) at harvest. Principle component analysis illustrated cv. AlfaV fruits under black nets were lower in mass, less firm, higher in bioactive compounds and soluble soild concentration (SSC) but lower in titratable acidity (TA) and intense in red colour. However, under pearl nets cv. AlfaV showed higher fruit mass, firmness and moderately higher bioactive compounds. Cultivar SCX 248 fruits under red nets were moderate in size, firmness, and bioactive compounds in comparison to the other nets. Cv. Irit fruit under all net types were small, less firm, low SSC, higher in TA while the black nets increased their bioactive compounds. Significant correlations were observed between bioactive compounds and the air temperature and photosynthetic active radiation. Cultivar AlfaV grown under the red net showed higher number of odour active aroma compounds in fruit while yellow nets significantly affected the synthesis of odour active aroma compounds. Pearl and red photo-selective nets improved the overall fruit quality; fruit mass, fruit firmness and bioactive components in cv. AlfaV and cv. SCX 248 respectively and can be further implemented within protected cultivation practices.

In the present study, the inhibition effects of Rosa damascena flower extract on the mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl environment were assessed through integrated electrochemical, morphological, and computational techniques. EIS results evidenced that by enhancing the Rosa damascena flower extract concentration in acidic media the corrosion resistance was significantly improved. The potentiodynamic polarization curves clarified the mixed anodic/cathodic Rosa damascena flower extract inhibition behavior in the HCl solution. SEM and AFM images taken from the surface of the steel coupons illustrated the surface heterogeneity reduction as well as corrosion resistance improvement. The inhibited samples showed high water contact angles due to the extract molecules adsorption at the steel/solution interface. The experimental outcomes were best fitted by Langmuir isotherm, pointing to a mono-layer adsorption of inhibitor molecules on the iron substance. Besides various experimental analyses, the computational tools at electronic/atomic levels based on quantum mechanics and molecular simulations were employed for exploring the local/global molecular reactivity and adsorption tendency over the metallic substrate.

Herein, we report that palladium-catalyzed C-H bond activation can overcome some of the challenges in the preparation of pi-extended aromatics containing one or two heteroelements, which are important structures in organic materials science. The sequential palladium-catalyzed intermolecular direct C5-arylation of heteroarenes by aryl bromides, followed by bromination of the heteroarene unit with N-bromosuccinimide, and finally palladium-catalyzed intramolecular direct arylation allowed the synthesis of the desired phenanthro[9,10-b]thiophenes, phenanthro[9,10-b]furans, phenanthro[9,10-b]thiazoles, acenaphtho[1,2-d]thiophenes, and acenaphtho[1,2-d]thiazoles in only three steps.
