Using 2-benzylthio-5-methyl-7-hydroxyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine as starting material, twelve novel 2-benzylthio-5-methyl-7-substituted benzyloxy-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives and their sulfonyl analogs were synthesized through sequential reactions of etherification and oxidation, resp. Their structures were characterized by 1H NMR, IR, MS and elemental anal. The preliminary bioassay indicated that some compounds exhibited certain fungicidal activities, for example, the inhibition rates of compounds 5c, 5k and 5l (50 μg/mL) against Botrytis cinerea were 61%, 69% and 85%, resp.

Plant bacterial diseases cause tremendous decreases in crop yield and quality, and there is a lack of highly effective and low-risk antibacterial agents. A series of novel pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidinone mesoionic compounds containing vanillin moieties were synthesized, and the application of these mesoionic compounds as plant antibacterial agents was reported here for the first time. The bioassay results revealed that the mesoionic compounds had good antibacterial activity. Of these compounds, compound (I) showed excellent in vitro activity against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, with an EC50 value of 1.1μg/mL, which was substantially better than that of bismerthiazol (92.7μg/mL) and thiodiazole copper (105.4μg/mL). Moreover, greenhouse condition trials indicated that the protective and curative activities of compound I against rice bacterial leaf blight were 75.12% and 72.04%, resp., which were better than those of bismerthiazol (62.24% and 50.83%, resp.) and thiodiazole copper (53.35% and 65.04%, resp.). These results provide a basis for the application of mesoionic vanillin moieties as new antibacterial agents.

In this study, a series of novel pyrethrin derivatives containing an 1,3,4-oxadiazole thioether moiety, I (R = Ph, 2-ClC6H4, 6-chloropyridinyl, etc.), were designed and synthesized. Bioassay results revealed that some of the target compounds possessed excellent insecticidal activities against Plutella xylostella (P. xylostella), Vegetable aphids (V. aphids), and Empoasca vitis (E. vitis), resp. In particular, compound I (R = 4-F3CC6H4) revealed the best insecticidal activities against P. xylostella and V. aphids, with the 50% lethal concentration (LC50) values of 1.78 and 1.61 mg/L, resp.; meanwhile, compound I (R = 5-chlorothiadiazol-2-yl) revealed the best insecticidal activity against E. vitis, with the LC50 value of 1.06 mg/L, which were superior to those of the com. insecticidal agents of chlorpyrifos, beta cypermethrin, spinosad, and azadirachtin. These results indicated that novel pyrethrin derivatives containing an 1,3,4-oxadiazole thioether moiety could effectively inhibit P. xylostella, V. aphids, and E. vitis.
