A convenient and efficient method for the synthesis of 2-mercaptobenzothiazoles from disulfide and CS2 mediated by a metal sulfide in water is described. This synthetic methodology could be used to prepare diverse 2-mercaptobenzothiazole derivatives in good to excellent yields. In this paper, the concept of metal sulfide-disulfide dynamic interchange reaction was put forward. Then the intermediates of the interchange reaction between NaHS and a disulfide were detected by LC-MS, which demonstrated that the S-S bond of the disulfide could be broken by the metal sulfide through the dynamic interchange reaction. In addition, NaHS was eventually transformed into sulfur S8 by the dynamic interchange reaction. Moreover, the underlying mechanism of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole formation is proposed, in which NaHS not only acts as an S-S bond cleaving agent but also as an activator of CS2. As a result, a novel synthetic route for the preparation of sulfur-containing heterocycles from a disulfide is developed.

A copper-catalyzed iminyl radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage/cross-coupling tandem reaction of cyclobutanone oxime esters with aryl thiols in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) at room temperature was developed, and aryl cyanopropyl sulfides were smoothly synthesized in 20-88% yields. By altering the copper reagent and the molar ratio of cyclobutanone oxime ester/aryl thiol/DBU, substitutional product N-arylthio cyclobutanone imines were selectively generated in 50-91% yields. Using this protocol, C-S bond and N-S bond formations using aryl thiols as sulfur sources were realized under very mild conditions without the use of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis techniques.

Enantioselective Synthesis of Axially Chiral Biaryls via Copper-Catalyzed Thiolation of Cyclic Diaryliodonium Salts

Here, we report a chiral copper(II)-bisoxazoline-catalyzed enantioselective ring opening of cyclic diaryliodonium salts with heteroaryl thiols. The readily available 2-mercaptobenzoxazole and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole derivatives reacted efficiently with cyclic diaryliodonium salts and afforded various axially chiral biaryls bearing iodine and sulfur functional groups in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. The products were further transformed into diverse enantiopure alkyl biaryl sulfides, which can be employed as chiral ligands.

We attribute this effect to the formation of acid through partial hydrolysis of sulfuryl chloride. This hypothesis is supported by the observation that improved yields were also obtained in the presence of some anhydrous acidic additives. The simple combination of sulfuryl chloride and water reproducibly provides excellent yields for a range of chlorinated products.
