Thermal degradation of sheep wool, human hair and chicken feathers was studied by TG-MSD/FTIR and by pyrolysis followed by GC-MSD analysis in order to identify the degradation compounds and the temperature range in which they are formed. Only small differences were found between the studied keratin samples. They consist mainly in shift of characteristic temperatures of degradation and in relative amounts of compounds in degradation products, especially in aqueous phase. Degradation started with formation of ammonia and CO2 (from 167 and 197 C respectively and with maximum evolution at 273 and 287 C respectively), continues with formation of sulphur-containing inorganic compounds (SCS, SCO, H2S and SO2 at 240, 248, 255 and 253-260 C respectively) and of water (255 C). Thiols are formed in two stages (257 and 320 C) while the evolution of nitriles is maximum around 340 C and continues up to about 480 C. Phenol and 4-methylphenol are the most important degradation compounds, formed at 370 and 400 C respectively. Nitrogen was present mainly in aliphatic/aromatic nitriles, pyrroles, pyridines and amides while sulphur was found mainly as sulphides, thiols, thiazoles and thiophenes.

The main objective of the study was to observe the antioxidant, cytotoxicity and anticancer activity of 12 marine endophytic fungi extracts. Marine endophytic fungi were isolated from 11 species of seaweeds, collected from Kovalam (covelong), Chennai and Mandapam, Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu, India. The isolated fungi were extracted with ethyl acetate solvent for bioactivity assay. DPPH assay was performed for antioxidant study. The extracts from Chaetomium sp., Phomopsis sp., Acremonium sp., Aspergillus Niger, Xylaria sp., Cladosporium sp., and Fusarium sp., showed greater antioxidant potential compared to other fungal extracts. The cytotoxicity assay was carried out in the Vero cell line and the anticancer activity was found in HEp2 cell line (Human Epidermoid carcinoma cells) and in A549 cell line (Human Lung Carcinoma – Epithelial cells). We observed that Phomopsis sp. fungal extract was more toxic to both the cancer cells, but, comparatively, the same extract exhibited less toxicity against the normal Vero cells. The IC50 values for other 11 different fungal extracts against Vero cells were lesser than the IC50 value of the respective extract against A549 cancer cells, indicating the toxicity of these 11 different fungal extracts.

Three different conjugated oligomers was synthesized such as Triphenylamine combined thiazole (TPA-TZ), Triphenylamine combined benzothiazole (TPA-BTZ) and triphenylamine combined benzothiadiazole (TPA-BTDZ) by Wittig condensation route. The effect of imine groups on the acceptor side from three oligomers were analysed from spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV-visible, fluorescence), thermal stability and electrochemical (Cv and conductivity) studies. These oligomers exhibited positive solvatochromism with respect to different polarity of the solvents. Absorption spectra resulted pi-pi* electronic transition was occurring at 330?364 nm in a solution state. The oligomers TPA-TZ, TPA-BTZ exhibited bluish green fluorescence emission at 465, 455 nm and TPA-BTDZ exhibited orange colour fluorescence emission at 566 nm. The electrochemical band gaps of the oligomers were calculated around 1.3-1.5 eV. The thermal analysis reveals that the TPA-BTDZ has shown higher thermal stability up to 270 C than other oligomers. The benzothiadiazole based TPA (TPA-BTDZ) has shown low band gap and optimum electrochemical conductivity (1.53×10?5 Omega?1 cm?1) than other oligomers. By increasing the water: THF fraction, switching of different emission colour, observed different emission wavelength and the particles was aggregated which was examined from SEM images.

The microbial communities, their predicted functional roles and associated flavour compounds in three typical traditional Chinese fermented vegetable (TCFV) foods, viz. Jiangxi yancai (JX), Sichuan paocai (SC) and Dongbei suancai (DB) were revealed by gene sequencing, predictive functionality and correlation analysis. Bacterial community analysis showed that Lactobacilli made up a large proportion (up to 77.6%) of the species in each food type and revealed clear differences in bacterial community structure among the three types. Lactobacillus sakei, Lactobacillus acetotolerans, and Pediococcus pentosaceus were found to be markers of the DB, SC, JX types, respectively. Overall, 8 organic acids (OAs), 17 amino acids (AAs) and 97 volatile flavour compounds (VFCs) were detected. Several Lactobacilli were closely correlated with more than 20 flavour compounds. Based on their abundance and putative contributions to flavour, Lactobacillus acetotolerans and Lactobacillus sakei may be considered core functional microbiota of each of the three TCFV foods. Functional analysis showed that microbial metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and nucleotides is a major determinant of the characteristics of all three TCFV product types. The systematic method used in this study allows identification of the key microorganisms involved in vegetable fermentation and provides a deeper understanding of their contribution to TCFV products.
