Thiazolium azomethine ylides, generated from 1,3-thiazoles equipped with a C-2 methanethiol group, participated in an efficient [3+2] cycloaddition reaction with acetylene derivatives to yield unique pyrrolo[2,1-b]thiazoles. The elimination of the methanethiol leaving group from the cycloadduct replaced the need for a sep. oxidation step and suppressed ring-opening side reactions. Products were obtained in short synthetic sequences to demonstrate their use as a scaffold for compound libraries.

The solar/chlorine system has been proposed as a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP) for efficient pollutant degradation and water disinfection by producing a series of reactive species including hydroxyl radicals (HO), chlorine radicals (Cl), and so forth. In this study, the role of natural organic matter (NOM) in the photolysis of free available chlorine (FAC) and the formation of HO and Cl in the solar/chlorine system was investigated employing nitrobenzene and benzoic acid as selective chem. probes. The decay rate of FAC was significantly accelerated in the presence of NOM at pH 5.5 under simulated solar irradiation, likely due to the photoreaction between FAC and the photoexcited NOM. The decay rate of FAC increased upon increasing the electron-donating capacity of NOM, which indicated that phenolic components play a significant role in the photodegradation of FAC. This acceleration mechanism was further verified using 4-nitrophenol as a model phenolic compound NOM promoted Cl formation and quenched HO in the solar/chlorine system. The proposed reaction mechanism included the reaction of excited singlet phenolic compounds in NOM with FAC, which yielded Cl. This study provides a useful insight into future applications for using the solar/chlorine system as a novel AOP for wastewater treatment or disinfection.

The differences in antioxidant activity between the binary complex and ternary complex were evaluated by using ABTS, DPPH, and reducing power assays. The differences in structural characterization between the binary complex and ternary complex were investigated by SEM (SEM), NMR (1H and 13C NMR), and Fourier transform IR (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The reducing power assays of the ternary complex was greater than that of the binary complex. The maximum of ABTS•+ scavenging activity of the binary complex and the ternary complex was 98.1% and 99.3%, resp., and the maximum DPPH• scavenging activity was 84.7% and 87.6%, resp. The results of structural characterization showed that they were very similar in structure. Both complexes are mainly composed of hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions, but the ternary complex is more tightly bound. In addition, the surface is smoother, and the gap is smaller.

The objectives of this research were to determine the sugar compositions, polyphenol contents and antioxidant effects of non-centrifugal sugars (NCS) of different sugarcane varieties. The polyphenols contents and compounds of nine NCSs obtained from the juices of different sugarcane varieties clarified with a 50 nm ceramic membrane (M-NCSs) were measured via ultraperformance liquid chromatog.-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS). Their antioxidant activities were investigated via 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging, 2, 2′-azino-bis-(3-Et benzothia-zoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay, β-carotene-linoleate assays, and ferrous and cupric ion chelating assays. Results showed that the phenolic compound with the highest content was gallic acid, and all samples were abundant in phenolics, including flavonoids, with high antioxidative activities. The content of phenolics and flavonoids, ranged from 17.24 to 21.14 mg/mL and from 203.55 to 350.37μg/mL, resp. Among these M-NCSs, Funong 41 (G) genotype had the best DPPH free radical scavenging activity. The GUC 23-2 (A1) genotype showed the best ABTS free radical scavenging activity. β-Carotene-linoleate assays revealed that the 15-6013 (B2) genotype exhibited the best antioxidant activity. The Guitang 42 (E) genotype displayed the best ferrous ion chelating activity. The Zhongzhe 9 (F) genotype presented the best cupric ion chelating activity. In summary, sugarcane variety influenced the polyphenols contents and antioxidant effects of M-NCSs. This study lays a foundation for the further study of M-NCSs.

In this work, we demonstrate the first example of a bendable biofuel cell (BFC)-based fully integrated biomedical nanodevice with simple, palm-sized, easy-to-carry, pump-free, cost-saving, and easy-to-use features for the point-of-care (POC) diagnosis of scurvy from a single drop of untreated human serum (down to 0.2μL) by integrating a bendable and disposable vitamin C/air microfluidic BFC (micro-BFC) (named iezCard) for self-powered vitamin C biosensing with a custom mini digital LED voltmeter (named iezBox) for signal processing and transmission, along with a ”built-in” biocomputing BUFFER gate for intelligent diagnosis. Under the simplicity- and practicability-oriented idea, a cost-effective strategy (e.g., biomass-derived hierarchical micro-mesoporous carbon aerogels, screen-printed technique, a single piece of Kimwipes paper, LED display, and universal components) was implemented for nanodevice design rather than any top-end or pricey method (e.g., photolithog./electron-beam evaporation, peristaltic pump, wireless system, and 3D printing technique), which enormously reduces the cost of feedstock down to ~USD 2.55 per integrated kit including a disposal iezCard (~USD 0.08 per test) and a reusable iezBox (~USD 2.47 for large-scale tests). These distinctive and attractive features allow such a fully integrated biomedical nanodevice to fully satisfy the basic requirements for POC diagnosis of scurvy from a single drop of raw human serum and make it particularly appropriate for resource-poor settings, where there is a lack of medical facilities, funds, and qualified personnel.

Objective To investigate the effects of spindle and kinetochore associated complex subunit 3 (SKA3) on the proliferation, migration and invasion of endometrial carcinoma cells. Methods Real-time quant. polymerasechain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blotting were used to detect the levels of SKA3 mRNA and protein expression in endometrial epithelial cells HEECs and endometrial carcinoma cells KLE, JEC and Ishikawa cells. And the Ishikawa cells with the highest expression level were selected for subsequent research. Ishikawa cells were divided into three groups. In the control group, Ishikawa cells were cultured normally. In the si-SKA3 group, 50 nmol/L siRNA-SKA3 was transfected into Ishikawa cells according to liposome 2000 instructions. In the NC group, 50 nmol/L siRNA-NC was transfected into Ishikawa cells according to liposome 2000 instructions. Cell proliferation was detected by cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) and clonal formation assay. Cell invasion and migration were detected by Transwell and scratch assay. And protein expression of CyclinD1, MMP-2, AKT, and p-AKT were detected by Western blotting. Results Compared with the HEECs of endometrial epithelial cells, the expression levels of SKA3 mRNA and protein in each endometrial carcinoma cell line were significantly increased (P<0.05). After interference with SKA3 expression, the proliferation and invasion ability of Ishikawa cells were decreased, the width of scratches were enlarged, and the protein expression of CyclinD1 and MMP-2 were significantly decreased (P<0.05). Compared with the control group and the NC group, the expression of AKT protein in si-SKA3 group was not significantly changed (P>0.05), while the expression of p-AKT protein decreased (P<0.05). Conclusion Interference with SKA3 can inhibit the proliferation, migration and invasion of Ishikawa cells of endometrial carcinoma, of which the mechanism may be related to the inhibition of SKA3 on PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.
