In particular, DSC shows that the hard and soft domains have distinct glass transition temperatures Similarly, simulations show that reduced soft segment content induces stronger microphase separation, reduces soft segment mobility, and increases ionic aggregate connectivity and size. These increased ionic associations result in elastomeric behavior, as evidenced by the higher rubbery plateau moduli observed at lower soft segment contents through DMA. Moreover, simulations show that ionic aggregation increases when switching from PEG to the less polar PTMO repeat units, which is consistent with DMA results showing higher plateau moduli for PTMO-based ionenes relative to PEG ionenes. DSC and X-ray diffraction determined that the degree of crystallinity increased with soft segment content regardless of segment type. Overall, these results suggest a semi-crystalline microphase-separated morphol. strongly influenced by charge d., the degree of ionic aggregation, and the resulting level of confinement and mobility of the soft segments.

A H2/O2 alk. polymer electrolyte fuel cell was fabricated and was able to achieve a peak power d. of 3.5 W/cm2 with a maximum c.d. of 9.7 A/cm2 at 0.15 V at 80°. The exceptionally high current and power densities were achieved by balancing and optimizing H2O removal and transport from the H neg. electrode to the O pos. electrode. High H2O transport and thinness are critical aspects of the membrane in extending the power and c.d. of the cells to new record values. The ACI serves two primary purposes: (i) facilitate hydroxide conduction between the catalyst and bulk electrolyte and (ii) bind the catalyst to the porous transport layer and membrane. High ion exchange capacity (IEC) ACIs are desired, however, high IEC can cause excessive water uptake (WU) and detrimental ACI swelling. Proper water management is a key factor in obtaining maximum performance in AEM-based devices. In this study, a series of poly(norbornene)-based ACIs were synthesized and deployed in hydrogen evolving AEMEL cathode electrodes. A balance between ionic conductivity, WU and ionomer swelling was achieved in the ACI by varying the IEC and degree of polymer crosslinking. It was found that higher IEC ACIs with light crosslinking are preferred in the HER electrode. Such a configuration fine-tuned the WU and ionomer swelling to achieve optimum cell performance and reduce cell operating voltages.

The effect of the 1,2-benzopyrone (BP) and 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO, DPO) additives on the formation, separation, motion, and recombination of charge carriers in the poly(3-dodecylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butanoic acid Me ester (P3DDT:PC61BM) organic photovoltaics was investigated by the light-induced ESR (LEPR) and NIR-Vis-UV spectroscopy within the wide temperature and photon energy range. These processes were interpreted in the framework of the exchange interaction of spin ensembles differently distributed in bulk heterojunctions of the P3DDT:PC61BM composite.
