Dissolved ferf-butyl (5-bromothiazol-2-yl)carbamate (0.5 g, 2.49 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (12.4 ml_ ) and cooled to -78 C. Carefully added n-butyllithium (1 .6M in hexanes, 1 .59 ml_, 3.98 mmol) and stirred for 10 minutes, followed by 3-chloro-5-fluorobenzaldehyde (424 mI_, 3.48 mmol). Quenched with saturated aqueous ammonium chloride (15 ml_) and extracted with ethyl acetate (20 ml_). Washed with brine (15 ml_), then dried over sodium sulfate. Filtered, then concentrated in vacuo. Purified reaction by column chromatography (eluting with 0-50% ethyl acetate/hexanes through 40g of silica gel) to give ferf-butyl (5-((3-chloro-5-fluorophenyl)(hydroxy)methyl)thiazol-2-yl)carbamate as an orange oil (138mg, 0.384 mmol, 15%).
